Gezellig Record's 30th release! And biggest physical release to date! Gezellig Records welcomes back Hualun with a full release of "Scene", a collection of songs recorded in Beijing & Shenzhen from 2020 to 2022. "Scene" can be considered a "partner" album to 2021's "wʌndərlænd," though more subtle and reflective. Throughout the album, listeners will find that the band of MK Zoo, Ding Mao, Rubey, and Wangwei traces their own history, weaving in their post-rock roots into contemporary minimal ambient into lo-fi hip-hop beats into jammier psychedelic improvisation.
"Scene" is available digitally and on vinyl, with a new mix, specifically for the record. "Scene" also has a companion cassette with four tape-exclusive tracks to create a full, 12-track album that spans across different media.
After wʌndərlænd, Hualun began a new project called "Scene" in 2020. Still starting from inside, with the help of different types of synthesizers, piano, and guitar, the band focuses on exploring and experimenting with more subtle sounds, and draws inspiration from the traditional music of East Asia. From the Wuhan punk music scenes in the early days, to the meditation with strong Eastern spirit, and then to contemporary minimal ambient music, while tracing the roots of their own music, Hualun also uses Scene to respond to the complex external world.
Their soundscapes bring to mind the legendary works of Brian Eno, Suzanne Ciani, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Laraaji, and Cluster, while staying in touch with contemporaries like Mogwai, Sarah Davachi, Tengger, and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith.
LiveChina Music calls Hualun’s recent creations “gorgeous tracks of atmospheric, world-building, soundscapes that burrow into your psyche”. And RADII describes their sounds as “soft and fragile […] seemingly ready to fall away at any moment.” Their score for Hu Bo’s An Elephant Sitting Still was listed as one of The Film Stage’s best original scores in 2019. Hualun created an original score to the Yung Chang documentary WUHAN WUHAN, which premiered at DOC NYC.
Hualun is a constantly evolving group, anchored by guitarist Zooo and synth wizard Ding Mao. They’ve experimented with instrumental rock to cinematic post-rock, from original film scores to “homework” type sound experiments, where the wʌndərlænd album falls. Known as a group of musicians who rely on their intuition, they are leaders in experimenting with sound, and exploring the source of natural growth with their music.
