The third full-length album from NO MEN is peak rock and roll and rage, a bright shining beacon of opposition and defiance in another year of uncertainty and chaos.
Recorded at Electrical Audio studio over 3 days with Steve Albini, the whiplash drum rhythms bursting from Eric’s kit and dual-threat vocalist/drummer Pursley’s stand-up tom and snare setup is just as dizzying and punishing as the live experience, but an inevitable pop sensibility always shines through. This is in no small part thanks to Pursley’s dynamic performance, snapping from snarling punk outbursts to floating ethereally over spine-tingling crescendos with her signature baritone vocals over bassist DB’s monstrous Bass VI riffs.
With mixing by Doug Malone, mastering by Carl Saff, album art by SINKORSWIM, FEAR THIS is an easy recommendation for fans of Rid of Me and In Utero, not to mention the Jesus Lizard, Screaming Females, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the Breeders, and any number of other notable artists that have created timeless albums at Electrical Audio over the decades.
FEAR THIS has the group’s most mature songwriting as well, alluding not only to the perennial concerns of the queer feminist punk band, like imminent environmental destruction or the oppression & injustice of an ever-growing fascist police state, but also bittersweet emotional anthems and reckonings with personal traumas, chronic illness, loss and longing. (For instance, “SADIE”, the eulogy for drummer Eric’s longtime canine companion who passed away during songwriting. R.I.P. good lady).
We’re returning to our roots, if you remember our 6th release from 2016: NO MEN’s album Dear God, Bring The Doom. Eight years later, we’re honored to have their album FEAR THIS pressed to beautiful ruby vinyl as our 28th release. Gezellig Records will be releasing FEAR THIS on beautiful ruby vinyl enclosed within a special “bloody” version of the cover art.
